CHAPTER FIFTEEN

We waited for almost two hours in a small room that looked more like a badly organized library than a meeting room, regularly poking our heads out of the doorway to the hallway beyond.

Several times the woman who had shown us in had come back to ask if we were sure we wanted to wait and we had reiterated that we weren’t going anywhere and then settled in.

I was glad we’d brought our packs with the usual emergency rations as we slipped into the third hour and no one had offered us food, drink, or any other comfort of any kind. We had seats and there was a window area Matraphiel and his friend were curled up in, enjoying the view, but that was it.

The planet we were on looked as beautiful from the window as it did inside the building, greenery, flowers and wildlife everywhere outside. I could see an entire city of similar buildings, glass, stone and ornamental architecture mixed in with all the plant life in a harmonious fashion.

It was reminiscent of some of the pictures Scarlet had shown me of some of the dragon cities, but it wasn’t as small as a single city. I could see spires and towers in every direction for miles and miles. They were clearly interspersed with wider green areas. When the entire population could fly, the buildings didn’t need to be close.

And when there was an abundance of magic, I was sure that crops could be grown so easily that production would be plentiful. This planet had everything it needed, and more. I had no doubt.

The longer I was in this room and looking out at the world beyond, the more I grew angry. I had to focus on food and what might be in the rest of this building to get past how I felt. No matter what I was asking for and they had access to here, I had to focus on the immediate goals. This planet could only help me so much at once.

A mentor and someone directly above me whom I could persuade to help more and more was what I needed. I just had to hope I would be assigned someone competent. Everything else would flow out of that. They could help me fight for what I could get out of the Protectorate.

In some ways it was adding another person to the chain of command and putting me further away from dealing with Isecrae directly. Almost like a demotion to myself, but it also promoted Isecrae and put someone else in her position. She was an opal dragon as well, and I got the impression that there were only opal dragons of different levels of powers above me anyway.

The Protectorate used metallic dragons to do more menial tasks, but it was ultimately staffed by what was left of the opal dragons in the universe.

So whoever my mentor was likely to be, they weren’t likely to be much more powerful than I was.

Finally I sensed a different dragon coming our way.
